If you’ve only experienced the film, you’re in for a surprise. Although the book and the film adaptation have similarities, they are very different, especially the novel’s unexpected ending, its greater intensity, and its deeper characterization. Gauntlet Press and Borderlands Press, in collaboration, will publish special editions of the entire Rambo trilogy over the next three years.Ĭalled “the father of the modern action novel,” FIRST BLOOD changed the genre. From New York Times bestselling author, David Morrell, comes this special edition of a classic thriller that introduced the character of Rambo, one of the most iconic action heroes of the twentieth century. 6/26/2023 0 Comments The dovekeepers by alice hoffmanRevka, a village baker’s wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers she brings to Masada her young grandsons, rendered mute by their own witness. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father, an expert assassin, never forgave her for that death. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman weaves a spellbinding tale of four extraordinary bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom comes to Masada by a different path. Only two women and five children survived. In 70 CE, nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on a mountain in the Judean, desert, Masada. Over five years in the writing, The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman’s most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research, set in ancient Israel. Buy the Book: Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop, IndieBound, Books-A-Million, Hudson Booksellers, Powell's, Amazon (Audio) Throughout her life she persevered, often in ill health, failing eyesight, her parents attempts to keep her under their control, determined to have her own life. Domineering parents, not allowed access to friends her own age, with the exception of her younger brother, her beloved pets, her love of the natural world, literature, her imagination and her art, all served to make her who she was, what she became. Had she had a different upbringing her wonderful stories would probably not exis. Most often though there is something in the case of Potter it is all. Could be something they saw, an incident about which they read, their pasts, upbringing, opinions on a particular matter. As I've matured as a reader (I like that phrase so much better than as I've aged) I have come to realize how much of themselves an author puts into their writing. 6/25/2023 0 Comments All My Rage by Sabaa TahirNoor, meanwhile, walks a harrowing tightrope: working at her wrathful uncle’s liquor store while hiding the fact that she’s applying to college so she can escape him-and Juniper-forever. Until The Fight, which destroys their bond with the swift fury of a star exploding. Growing up as outcasts in the small desert town of Juniper, California, they understand each other the way no one else does. Salahudin and Noor are more than best friends they are family. After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Cloud’s Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start. Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match. The introduction alone, to this collection, has given me a lot to think on. There’s also an m/m romance story between a teenage boy and an AI who is also a cyberengineered super-intelligent rat! (In this story, same-sex relationships are accepted, but human/AI romantic relationships were the “the sort of thing that was whispered about, something that lived in the shadows.”) The question of whether to stay on a planet that’s been destroyed by (white, wealthy) human activity is very different here than in a typical white space travel story. They assume a greater responsibility for protecting the Earth than I’m used to from a dystopia. These stories include a relationship with the land that isn’t common in science fiction stories. This collection is such a refreshing change of perspective. As I was reading Love after the End, I was reminded just how colonialist SFF often is as a genre, whether it’s about “conquering new worlds” and literally establishing colonies, or centring Medieval England in fantasy stories, or just holding up white, straight, cis, male protagonists as the heroes. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Ashley eckstein disneyWhile I grew up taking acting classes, a lot of my training has come on the job.
